How to Navigate a Traffic Circle

Traffic circles were created as a safe and efficient way to manage the traffic flow. They are also commonly known as roundabouts.  Here's a guide on to assist in navigating a traffic circle:

1. Approach at a Safe Speed

Reduce your speed and be prepared to yield to any vehicles already inside the circle. Typically speed limits are lower than regular roads, so obey these limits. Look for posted signs.

2. Look for a Yield Sign

If you see a yield sign, it means you must give the right-of-way to vehicles already in the circle. You can proceed if the circle is clear and there are no oncoming vehicles.

3. Observe the Road for Pedestrians

Pedestrians have the right-of-way at any crosswalks that are in and out of the traffic circle. Be sure to look around for if anyone is crossing the road.

4. Pick Your Lane

Before entering the traffic circle, check the lane marking to choose the appropriate lane for your intended exit. It’s important to be alert to where each lane is going.

5. Enter the Circle

When it's safe to do so, enter the traffic circle. Yield to any vehicles already inside the circle while merging with traffic.

6. Maintain Your Speed

While inside the circle, maintain a consistent speed and keep an eye on the traffic and road signs to help.

7. Use Turn Signals

As you approach your intended exit, use your turn signals to indicate your intention to exit the circle. Be sure to check your mirrors and blind spots for other vehicles before changing lanes.

8. Yield When Exiting and Watch for Cyclists

Check for pedestrians in crosswalks and yield to any vehicles that are still in the circle before exiting the traffic circle. Also, look out for any cyclists that are in the road or crosswalks.

9. Be Courteous

Avoid tailgating, aggressive maneuvers, and road rage while driving.  Being courteous is the best way to smoothly transition in and out of the round about.

10. Exit Carefully

Exit the roundabout carefully and adhere to the rules of the road you are on.

The key to successfully navigating a traffic circle is to yield to other vehicles and follow the flow of traffic, keeping a steady pace. By following these guidelines, you'll be better prepared to safely and confidently navigate traffic circles.
