Want to learn more about safety measures going into effect to protect your privacy while driving your vehicle? A new bill is working to safeguard your privacy by adding protections to connected vehicle services in Division 12 of the Vehicle Code (Chapter 6, Section 28200). Starting January 1, 2028, vehicles will alert drivers if their location is being tracked by someone outside the car through the vehicle’s connected services. By July 2025, manufacturers will need to ensure drivers can easily disconnect unauthorized access, and by 2026, even older vehicles with location tracking will be covered. Additionally, drivers will have a straightforward button inside the car to disable location tracking—no apps or passwords required. This law is all about making sure your car isn’t used to spy on you, while giving you full control over your privacy.
