Simple, Cheap and Easy Traffic School

Walk Smart, Drive Smart

September marks Pedestrian Safety Month in California, a reminder that safe roads are a shared responsibility. It couldn’t come at a better time with schools back in session, cooler evenings drawing people outside, and busy streets full of cars, bikes, and walkers.  It’s the perfect time to refresh your awareness of pedestrian safety.

California has some of the busiest roads in the country, and unfortunately, pedestrian accidents happen far too often. A split second of distraction, whether from a driver or a pedestrian, can change everything.  Many of these crashes occur in crosswalks, school zones, and neighborhoods—places we expect to feel safe.

Tips for Drivers

If you’re behind the wheel, here are a few ways to make the road safer for everyone on foot:

  • Slow down in school zones and neighborhoods. Kids don’t always look both ways before stepping out. Always exercise extra caution in locations where children may be present.
  • Always yield at crosswalks. Even if someone steps out at the last second, your job is to stop. Sometimes pedestrians think you see them, even though you may not. Always be aware and ready to stop.
  • Stay off the phone. Texts and notifications can wait—pedestrian safety can’t.
  • Be extra alert at night. Visibility drops, but people still walk, run, and bike.

Tips for Pedestrians

Safety isn’t just on drivers. If you’re walking, you play a role too:

  • Use marked crosswalks. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
  • Be seen. Bright clothing or reflective gear helps a lot after dark.
  • Put distractions away. Looking down at your phone  can be just as dangerous as a driver looking at theirs. This also applies to wearing headphones and not listening to what could be happening on the road.

A Shared Responsibility

The truth is, safe streets depend on both sides. When drivers take their time and pedestrians stay aware, we all win. A few extra seconds of awareness can prevent tragedy.

At In and Out Traffic School, we believe being a safe driver goes beyond avoiding tickets. It’s about protecting your community and looking out for those around you. This Pedestrian Safety Month, take a moment to notice crosswalks and watch your speed.
